I don't like Armageddon novels.

o? why's that? and yeah, helsreach is the black templars, steel legion, sororitas and for a bit some salamanders defending helsreach: the largest city on armageddon during the 3rd war
(note i've in total read....4 black library novels. have started 3 more. I've read helsreach, the sequel: blood and fire, Path of the renegade and path of the incubus. I started a thousand sons and path of the archon and....I was reading the ravenor omnibus. can't bring meself to continue with it)

I just don't really like Armageddon, it makes no sense... the only redeeming quality is that it has my favourite chapter there.

If it was accurate too lore the orks would have either been turned into mush by viral bombing, then the imperials would repopulate the planets undamaged surface... while the space marines massacre the orks space fleet.

Or they would have just assassinated Ghazkull and stopped the WAAAGH.

Or so many other possibilities.

But no.

well i'll tell you this
1) they tried viral weapons in the second war. not only did they fail to hold back the orks but they malfunctioned and killed many of their own men. they don't wanna try that again
2) problem. in the 2nd war the orks didn't have a fleet. they had one space hulk that showed up completely unexpected, crashed into the planet and discorged the entire ork army. in the third war....put it this way. the imperial fleets including several space marine fleets, are barely surviving in orbit, much less winning. you have no idea how many ork ships are there, and more showing up all the time. the ENTIRE celestial lions chapter fleet has been destroyed. the combined might of a massive imperial fleet and multiple chapter fleets only managed to delay orks landing on the planet for a total of 2 days. ghaz's tactics have now been pretty much crafted to beat the stiff gunlines of the guard and the fast hard hitting strikes of the astartes. he's learned from the 2nd war and his conquests since. he's learned well.
3) nuther problem. even when ghaz was on armageddon he very rarely commanded battles in person. and now he's left armageddon and no one knows where he is

Meh, keep viral bombing until it works.

well to be fair, astartes orbital bombardments were pivotal in winning the 2nd war
in the 3rd war however, lets just say if it's incredibly difficult for the salamanders battle barge to enter low orbit long enough to drop of 5 drop pods, i doubt a sustained orbital bombardment is an option here

Then why not just abandon Armageddon, blow up the star that it orbits around, and build somewhere else?

because if armageddon falls the sector falls
it's an incredibly importent planet, and provides vital supplies and similar things to worlds across the imperium, and most importantly to its home sector
