- GREY KNIGHTS -
Specialist Ranks - Grey Knights Brotherhood Champion
A Grey Knights Brotherhood Champion is a specialist rank unique to the Grey Knights Space Marine Chapter. These Astartes Champions stand at the forefront of each Grey Knight Brotherhood (the equivalent of a standard Space Marine company), a superlative warrior who has forsaken all other martial disciplines to pursue perfection with the blade. A Brotherhood Champion holds foremost responsibility for the martial training of new Aspirants to the Chapter, but on the battlefield they play a vital role that is pivotal to the survival of the Chapter. Their chief duty is to act as a bodyguard to their Brother-Captain. They will willingly sacrifice themselves if necessary, but this ultimate sacrifice is rare, however, as few foes are skilled enough to defeat a Brotherhood Champion of the Grey Knights in combat.
A Brotherhood Champion holds chief responsibility for the training of newly recruited Chapter Aspirants, but on the field of battle, his primary role is to act as his Brother-Captain's personal bodyguard. The skill and knowledge of such an officer is not easily replaced, and it is only proper that they receive the foremost protection that the Chapter can provide. Each Champion therefore stands ready to die in his Captain's stead. That said, such a heroic sacrifice is seldom necessary, for only the deadliest (or luckiest) of opponents stand any chance of breaking a Brotherhood Champion's guard, let alone surviving his vengeful return strike. Should a Champion be struck down, it is unwise to count him out of the fight too readily. Upon receiving a mortal wound, a Brotherhood Champion unleashes a pulse of psychic energy into his Aegis Power Armour -- one final burst of forbidden magic for one final portentous deed. This dying impulse impels the suit to temporarily re-knit sinew and bone, and gives the fallen Brotherhood Champion the opportunity to strike one last blow for his Battle-Brothers -- an attack all the more deadly for its unexpected source. This last act thus performed, the Champion's soul finally passes beyond the veil of realspace, his body to be later recovered and interred in the Vaults of Anarch on Titan, so he may continue to guard against evil in death as he did in life.

- ROGUE TRADER -
Archetypes - Scoundrel - The "Rogue" Trader
Many Rogue Traders are scoundrels of the worst order, despite all the trappings of power they display. Such individuals carry themselves with swaggering self-assurance, and through long practice are able to bluff their way into the courts of kings and the bedchambers of princesses with equal panache. The scoundrel looks to turn every possible situation to his own personal advantage, and will often take risks others would find reckless, gambling with his own life and those of all his servants. Violence is rarely the first option for such Rogue Traders, and they often maintain a mask of self-effacing amiability. Beneath this façade lurks a keen mind and a skilled warrior able to take on most enemies and win.
Some Rogue Traders of this type combine bravado with daring, often leading expeditions to newly discovered worlds in person. Leading a small retinue of trusted associates, such Rogue Traders get themselves into all manner of entanglements, but always seem to escape relatively unharmed, invariably carrying some priceless artefact that will seal their fortune. Others turn their vessels into privateers, enjoying a career as a buccaneer preying on the shipping of alien empires -- and human rivals.

As part of my contract with bushwookie, in which he gives me the soul of his first born

I hereby bring you FACT OF THE DAY!
Raven guerd

Da raven guerd are a first founding chapter, corax was their primarch who disappeared to god knows where sometime after the dropsite massacre

Raven guerd favour the strike from the shadows tactics, ie use immense amounts of jump packs to drop into a place, destroy nearly everything then fuck off, this has been perfected by shadow captain shrike, who is the only named raven guard to get in a games workshop book which has rules for him

Still more than iron hands...*lecry*

Although, there was this one time where iron hands and raven guard were defending a forge world together from a wierd wagh led by a ork psyker dude. The iron hands pretty much used the raven guard as bait to lure the main ork leaders into a place then when the raven guard started losing the fight they just destroyed everything. Although, the raven guard were tying to warn the iron hands that a static defense is useless against the orks because the wierdboy made a manufactorum wall disappear. Unfortunately for the iron hand commander, when he returned back to medusae, the iron council was kinda pissed off at him because he didn't accept any additional knowledge. Not angry about killing a raven guard though.

- LEGION OF THE DAMNED -

The Legion of the Damned are a mysterious band of Space Marines who appear unbidden when all hope seems lost, striding forth from their hidden netherworld to bring retribution to the Imperium's foes. Once their bloody work is complete they vanish into myth once more. They are a legend, whispered in secret by a suspicious few, that the Emperor has the loyalty of a force from beyond reality. The Legion is an army of vengeance and of flame, a brotherhood of warriors who appear at first glance to be Space Marines but quickly prove to be more lethal than even those most formidable of transhuman warriors. These warriors are variously said to dwell in the spaces between this world and the realm of the Warp, in the hopes and dreams of desperate men, and in a pocket of reality eternally lit by the fires of hatred. Rare is the man that has witnessed the sudden violence of their attack, rarer still those with the strength of will to keep their sanity intact afterwards.

In truth, the Astartes that make up the self-proclaimed Legion of the Damned are remnants of the lost Loyalist Fire Hawks Chapter. They fight as a single unit and often appear mysteriously to aid an Imperial military force at a moment when they are about to be overwhelmed by the foe. The Legion's Space Marines are afflicted by a strange Warp contagion that destroys their sanity; as it progresses, their bodies decay physically at the cellular level, but they grow in supernatural strength and the ability to use the power of the Empyrean against the Emperor's foes. Each Astartes of the Legion is rapidly approaching the moment when he will finally succumb to the contagion. Combat can initiate the final stages of the disease, in which the afflicted Space Marine reaches a peak in physical power but also enters a permanently berserk state that ends with his death.

The haunting legend of the Legion of the Damned is known across the galaxy, and even nonbelievers speak of such things in hushed tones. These silent warriors are Space Marines in appearance, their black armour adorned with images of bones and fire, yet they are not of any Chapter recognised in the Imperium. Most eyewitnesses dispute even the Legionaries' mortality, for an eerie glow suffuses their sable armour and a halo of ghostly fire dances about their feet. There are many corroborated accounts of Legionaries of the Damned enduring firepower that would annihilate mortal men. Among them is a report from the Keyan battle zone, where a handful of Astartes of the Legion of the Damned were witnessed walking unharmed from the Volcano Cannon blast that claimed four Predators and several squads of Space Marines. The Bolters carried by the Legionaries, though in aspect no different to those borne by other Space Marines, discharge flaming projectiles that can pierce the strongest armour. Nothing, not Chaos Chosen, rockcrete bastion, nor boiling lava can stay the spectral wrath of the Legion of the Damned.

The nature and origin of the Legion of the Damned is shrouded in mystery and myth. Some rumours suggest that they are the survivors of the lost Fire Hawks Chapter, transmuted by the Warp Storm that claimed their vessel. Others imply that the Legion are an extension of the Emperor's will, time-lost saviours, or even the vengeful spirits of Space Marines slain in the Imperium's many wars. In the course of their investigations, several [Inquisitors]] have tried to capture or intercept the Legion of the Damned, but all have failed; events always inexplicably conspire to prevent the Inquisitors from getting close to their quarry, leaving them nothing more than frustrated witnesses to the event.

Who, or what, guides the Legion of the Damned is an enigma to all save the beneficent Emperor Himself. They appear only in times of great need, coalescing from the fires of a desperate battlefield to turn a disaster into victory. Regardless of the conflict, the Legionaries fight with a chill precision that few mortal warriors can match, sweeping enemy positions like vengeful ghosts. Terror is their harbinger and oblivion their gift. After the battle, the Legion of the Damned depart as suddenly as they arrived, leaving only the bodies of the slain and wonder in their wake.

- Dark Truth -
Another belief whispered amongst the hidden orders of the Adeptus Astartes is that the Legion of the Damned was once a Chapter of Space Marines, a force that has been claimed by the fires of the Warp and reborn into a more sinister form. After all, across the Imperium's long history, several contingents of Space Marines have made translation into the Empyrean and emerged changed as a result, or not emerged at all. Prominent amongst these are the Fire Hawks, a Chapter whose history was blighted by disaster. In the year 963.M41, the Fire Hawks were sent to the Crow's World Sub-sector to engage a flotilla of Eldar raiders and bring the anarchy that was spreading there to an abrupt end. The scale of the xenos incursion was such that the entire Chapter fleet, including the Chapter's mobile fortress-monastery, the Raptorus Rex, made a successful Warp jump from the Piraeus System 120 light years from their target coordinates. The five starships, over eight-hundred Battle-Brethren, and two thousand other personnel expected to reach their targetted quarry within no more than half a solar day, though they never translated back into realspace. The Crows World Sub-sector was left to the mercies of its Eldar persecutors. Twenty standard years after the event, the Chapter was officially declared perditas. The great Bell of Lost Souls tolled a thousand times, and a black candle was lit in the Adeptus Chapel of Fallen Heroes within the Imperial Palace upon Terra itself.
In 986.M41 a routine Imperial Navy patrol passed through the Ork-held star system of Jakor-tal. The squadron discovered altogether unexpected scenes of devastation. The limited facilities available to the patrol could uncover no clue to the identity of the attacking forces. The incident was noted and passed into the records of the Adeptus Administratum. A rash of similar incidents within the same and adjoining sectors aroused the interest of the Inquisition but no sign of the intruders was discovered for almost a year. Then, a patrol ship in the Maran Sub-sector narrowly avoided a collision with a spacecraft at the Cift System jump-point. The patrol ship was entering the Cift System as the unidentified craft was leaving. Alerted by the close encounter, the patrol crew scanned the entire jump-area and discovered two long cylindrical objects within the intruder's projected flight-path. These were hauled aboard and proved to be standard coffins used for Imperial starship burials in space, though they lacked any identification markings. The coffins were shipped back to Terra and opened by the Adeptus Mechanicus. The coffins themselves were identified as belonging to the Absolute, one of the spacecraft from the vanished Fire Hawk Chapter fleet. Inside were the armoured remains of two Space Marines. The armoured suits seemed to belong to members of the lost Chapter, and were carefully broken open. The bodies within were human, but further identification proved impossible due to their advanced state of decay. The unconventional armour colours and unofficial insignia puzzled the investigators, but serial numbers on the armour tallied with the equipment made by or issued to the Fire Hawks by the Mechanicus.
Almost a standard year later, a besieged Imperial Research Station received unexpected help. The garrison had been attacked by Ork Freebooterz. After three hours of fighting the situation looked hopeless for the station's defenders. Then, without warning, the Orks found themselves attacked from the rear. Within half an hour, several hundred Orks had fallen to the mysterious, Power Armoured figures. Then, as suddenly as they had appeared, the unknown warriors vanished. This time they left behind a banner—the gnarled Chapter banner of the Fire Hawks -- and inscribed upon it was the High Gothic motto In dedicato imperatum ultra articulo mortis ("For the Emperor beyond the point of death"). As well as the banner there was a digital flight recorder and sundry other sealed items. These were shipped to Terra.
Yet there are those who believe the Fire Hawks underwent some strange metamorphosis after their disappearance, maintaining that they became irrevocably changed by the tides of the Warp, both dying and somehow remaining alive. Knowing they could never openly serve the Imperium in their Warp-tainted state, they became the Legion of the Damned, fighting on in the Emperor's name from the hell that had become their home. The simplest theory as to the Legion's nature, and therefore perhaps the most credible, is that its warriors are simply ghosts. They are the spiritual echoes of once-great Space Marines of the Adeptus Astartes whose hatred for the enemies of the Imperium was so powerful that it transcended mortal limits and became something eternal. If this is true, then the Legionaries may come from a great many different Chapters, their insignia and heraldry subsumed by their supernatural rebirth and replaced by icons of doom so that they are linked together by their own damnation. The few reports of those who have seen the Legion of the Damned unhelmed speak of ghostly pallor, sunken skin, and hollow eye-sockets. Every supernatural occurrence, every glitch in reality that is attributed to these mysterious warriors adds credence to this theory. Perhaps those who know of their existence prefer to imagine the spectral Space Marines as revenants, for what mortal mind could possibly stand a life bound to the hell dimension of the Warp and still remain sane?
The original Fire Hawks numbered 200 surviving Battle-Brothers. All of the Chapter's gene-seed had been lost, all of its Initiates killed, and most of the Chapter's officers were gone. None of the Chapter's human serfs had survived at all. To make matters worse, the brethren had been mutated by their intense, unshielded exposure to the Warp. This change became more obvious over the next few solar months. The surviving Fire Hawks' skins began to blacken and blister, and their flesh began to fester and putrefy. Slowly they began to die. Within solar days of the transition into normal space it became obvious that the Chapter had been exposed to some form of dangerous Warp mutation or disease. It took many years to navigate a way back within the borders of the Imperium, during which time almost half the surviving brethren succumbed to the malady. Those who remained were no longer sane. Pain and despair had driven even their hardened minds beyond the point of rationality. Doomed to agonising deaths, they gradually became obsessed with their fate. Now they only wanted to die. But they were still Space Marines, still loyal to the Emperor and Mankind. They were determined that they would die only for a purpose.
So began the unending war of the Legion of the Damned. The surviving Fire Hawks Astartes elected to remove all official insignia from their armour. Instead their armour was painted black, decorated by each Battle-Brother with whatever emblems of death he chose. Most of the Legion's Astartes employed a similar theme—skeletons, bones and skulls. All ranks and company structure were abolished, since most of the Chapter's officers were already dead and the remaining warriors were too few to make up a fully functioning Chapter hierarchy. All of the Legion's Battle-Brothers were to be equal before death—leveled in station by the certainty of their collective assured extinction. Using the Emperor's Tarot to go where they were most needed, the warriors decided to expend their lives attacking the Imperium's enemies wherever they could be found. The disease had robbed them of their sanity and their health, but never their loyalty.

- S k i t a r i i -
Variants
Skitarii were generally divided into different types depending upon the role they were expected to play on the battlefield.
- Balisteria -
The Balisteria were the artillery units of the Skitarii. The artillery used by the Skitarii ranged from Thudd Guns to massive Ordinatus pieces. The term Balisteria included both the vehicle or artillery piece, as well as the Skitarii crews manning them.
- Cataphractii -
The Cataphractii were the Skitarii's armour units. The Skitarii made use of everything from small armoured personnel carriers like the Chimera and Rhino to heavy combat walkers and super heavy tanks such as a Baneblade.
- Classiarii -
The Skitarii forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus take a variety of forms. On warships and Explorator vessels operating within the Koronus Expanse and the Calixis Sector, specially-programmed Skitarii are a necessity, for they serve as the members of boarding parties, security personnel and bodyguards where other forms of Skitarii would be impractical. Within the Mechanicus territories of the Calixis Sector, these warriors are known as Classiarii, a term of obscure meaning within the ancient traditions of the Calixian Mechanicus, believed to mean "mariners." Nigh-impervious to vacuum, fitted with thick, implanted armour, and equipped with an array of implanted weaponry designed for void combat and combat in the cramped enclosures of a starship, a Classiarius trooper is literally built for ship-to-ship combat.
- Herakli -
The Herakli were Skitarii heavy fire support specialists. These massive, vat-grown cybernetic soldiers were as large as Space Marines and were capable of carrying heavy laser weapons and multi-barrelled Autocannons with ease. The Herakli wore heavy red robes and cowls that were covered in Mechanicus sigils and were protected by thick ceramite amour plating that covered their chests and shoulders.
- Huscarls -
The Huscarls were the personal bodyguards of Skitarii officers and commanders, hand-picked by these individuals and trained by them to perfection. The duty of the Huscarls was to protect their commander in the heat of battle and make sure that no debilitating harm came to him.
- Hypaspists -
Hypaspist Skitarii were the most basic augmented infantrymen of the Tech-Guard and were armed with cybernetically hard-linked Lasguns similar to those used by the soldiers of the Imperial Guard. Hypaspists were generally more powerful and skilled soldiers than standard Guardsmen as a result of the cybernetic enhancements that made them stronger and more accurate than normal humans and the psychosurgery they had undergone to suppress their emotional reactions and make them immune to panic or fear. However, this enhancement also made Hypaspists less independent and able to think for themselves in combat.
- Praetorians -
The Praetorians represented the most elite troops to be found amongst the Skitarii. They were super-enhanced humans augmented by a wide array of cybernetics and integrated heavy weapons. However, many old Imperial sources also suggest that Praetorians are instead an elite Skitarii type similar to Imperial Guard Storm Trooper units, but possessed of advanced bionic augmentations, putting them somewhere in combat effectiveness and elite status between Storm Troopers and Space Marines. Some Praetorians are in fact a form of Combat Servitors, rather than living, cybernetic humans. They move on tank treads and are armed with powerful heavy weaponry, such as Plasma Cannons. All of these different variations of the Praetorian Skitarii are completely plausible, and based on the preferences of the Mechanicus Magi who build them.
- Sagitarii -
The Sagitarii were the Skitarii's heavy weapon specialists. This class of Skitarii only include dedicated heavy weapons squads, as heavy weapons specialists attached to Hypaspist squads are still called Hypaspists.
- Tribunes -
The Tribunes are the officers of a Skitarii unit. Though all Skitarii ultimately bow to the authority of the Adeptus Mechanicus' Magi and Archmagi, these are all command personne found at the grand strategic level. The Tribunes handle the day-to-day tactical and strategic command roles for the Skitarii.
- Venatorii -
The Venatorii were created in the wake of the War of Brass that devastated the Skitarii Legions of the Lathe Worlds, leaving entire Forge Worlds of the Calixis Sector with virtually no troops left. The reigning High Fabricator started a discreet rearmament drive throughout the Calixian Forge Worlds. The more military minded Tech-priests were moved into position to help replenish the fighting ranks of the Mechanicus within the sector. It took many years to bring this grand plan together, but once everything was in place, the High Fabricator of the Lathes found himself with a new force consisting of some of the best-trained and best-equipped troops in the Calixis Sector. Dubbed the Venatorii, the new hunters were a force that was to remain separate from the recovering Calixian Skitarii forces and act as the true elite troops of the Lathes. With their unique organisation and frightening red armour, the few outside of the Mechanicus who were aware of their existence soon began to call them the Crimson Guard.
- Executors Fetial -
The Executors Fetial are the diplomats and ambassadors of the Titan Legions, and are noted to have undergone much of the same combat conditioning as the Skitarii, save for the rampant muscle mass increase and inducement of an adrenal battle trance. It is unknown if the Executors are considered to be official members of the Tech-Guard.

- Momentous Characters Of Warhammer 40,000 Universe -
Kardan Stronos
Kardan Stronos is an Iron Father who serves as the de facto Chapter Master of the Iron Hands Space Marines.
Stronos served for years as Iron-Captain of Clan Garrsak before he was inducted into the Iron Hands Chaplaincy, eventually traveling to Sacred Mars for training as a Techmarine. His reverence of the machine and hatred of weakness earned him a place on the Clan Council, and his ruthlessness and desire to succeed made him the logical choice to be the de facto Chapter Master of the Iron Hands, taking all power and responsibilities for campaigns involving multiple Clan Companies and seceding power back to the Clan Council upon the end of the campaign. It is a testament of his skill as a leader and warrior that the Clan Council has appointed him Commander for over three consecutive centuries. Under his leadership, the Iron Hands have destroyed Waaagh! Drezgnod and the renegade Blood Heralds, as well as purging Hive Fleet Moloch from the Regis System. Of all the enemies the Iron Hands have faced, it is the Necrons that Kadan Stronos hates the most, viewing the soulless automatons as abominations in the eyes of the Omnissiah. When expecting to face Necron forces, Stronos will persecute the wars with the Necrons more perniciously than the Clan Council believe to be necessary.
During the era of the Kristosian Conclave, Stronos was among those who opposed the Kristonian faction of the Iron Hands and stressed the Chapter's humanity over the machine aspect emphasized by Kristos and his ilk. After the Gaudinian Heresy, where a third of the Iron Council was lost, Stronos inspired the remaining Council members to endure by reminding them that they were also men and not purely cold machines. Since then, Stronos was elected War Leader of the Iron Council and was reelected at every opportunity since.
Stronos had been on the Iron Council as De Facto Chapter Master for 300 consecutive years as of 760.M41, making him the longest serving Iron Hands leader since Ferrus Manus. He gave up his position on the Iron Council in 998.M41 after battling the Farsight Enclaves on Fall'yth, but was immediately reappointed by the Council in the face of Hive Fleet Leviathan, despite the objection of several veteran Iron Fathers.
Personality
Stronos is an avid believer in firepower and considers it the only tenet of battle. He longs for the day when his entire Chapter can ride into battle on Razorback assault transports and believes these vehicles to be the pinnacle of battlefield effectiveness. Like many in the Iron Hands, he is also a follower of the Cult Mechanicus and worships the Omnissiah.
Stronos's desire to eradicate weakness has extended to his fellow Iron Hands, arguing that the Clan Council should be expanded to include more than just the technically minded Iron Fathers. At his urging, the Clan Council has expanded to include Iron-Captains, Apothecaries, Chaplains, and others, broadening the collective wisdom of the Iron Hands. Stronos also believes that by suppressing their emotions, the Iron Hands are making themselves weaker, believing that only by experiencing and mastering their emotions can they become the perfect Space Marines. While his actions have undoubtedly strengthened the Chapter, many other Iron Fathers view the changes he has made with caution. Stronos has long displayed difficulty mastering his emotions, and many fear that he will suffer the same fate as their Primarch Ferrus Manus in allowing his anger to overcome his judgement.

"If i were a proper brother captain i would know the prayer that we are supposed to say. But i think we all know what we are supposed to do. We do not know what our chances of survival are, so we fight as if they were zero. We do not know what we are facing, so we fight like it was the dark gods themselves. Nobody will remember us now and we may never be buried beneath Titan, so we will build our own memorial here. The Chapter might lose us and the imperium may never know we existed, but the enemy - the enemy will know, the enemy will remember. We will hurt it so badly that they will never forget us until the stars burn out and the emperor vanquishes at the end of time. When Chaos is dying its last thoughts will be of us. That will be our memorial. Carved in the heart of Chaos. We cannot lose Grey Knights. We have already won."

- Watchers in the Dark -

The Watchers in the Dark are a strange race of humanoid creatures of small stature who inhabit The Rock, the mobile Fortress-Monastery of the Dark Angels Space Marine Chapter. They are often utilised by the Chapter as servants. They possess a unique and powerful psychic talent which enables them to protect themselves from most forms of attack. Although they may accompany their human masters onto the battlefield, they never take an active part in combat themselves.

These diminutive, hooded attendants cluster around the highest-ranking warriors of the Dark Angels and have long been a mystery to onlookers. What manner of creature lies beneath a Watcher's long robes none can say, not even the other Chapters of the Unforgiven. The nature of the creature under the robes is unknown to even the Battle-Brothers of the Dark Angels. Perhaps the Watchers are simply vat-grown Servitor-constructs of an unusual size and form. Perhaps they are some manner of hitherto unknown xenos creature who were native to the Dark Angels' lost homeworld of Caliban. Perhaps they are something more sinister, a corporeal manifestation of the Unforgiven's collective guilt.

During the Great Crusade era, a Knight of The Order by the name of Zahariel (who would later go on to become a Librarian of the Dark Angels Legion) first encountered these mysterious creatures while undertaking a Beast Quest. He recognised these entities as the Watchers in the Dark, creatures who had existed in the ancient legends of Caliban for as long as anyone could remember, living in the darkest regions of the wild hinterlands of Caliban's forests. These humanoid entities warned the young knight to cease in the pursuit of his goals. Undeterred, Zahariel continued to undertake his quest. The Watchers in the Dark appeared to oppose Chaos and seemed, on some level, to be attempting to limit the power of Caliban's Great Beasts.

It is said that the Watchers in the Dark are the heralds of troubled times ahead. They appeared before Lion El'Jonson's discovery by the Emperor on the world of Caliban and just before the eventual betrayal of the Dark Angels Legion by the Dark Angels left behind on Caliban by the I Legion who became the Fallen Angels. During the Fall of Caliban, the great conflagration between the Arch-Heretic Luther and the Primarch Lion El'Jonson that caused the destruction of the Dark Angels' homeworld, the Watchers in the Dark carried away the mortally wounded Primarch, as the Fallen were swept up in a great vortex and cast into the Warp and scattered throughout time and space.

Since that time, the Watchers in the Dark now haunt the lower levels of The Rock. These silent figures have been seen bearing the Battle-Brothers' weapons into combat and seem near immune to all acts of violence or use of psychic powers. Any Battle-Brother of the Dark Angels or the other Unforgiven Chapters who gains the honour of being accompanied by one of these strange beings is incredibly fortunate and is clearly destined for great things.

Deep within the bowels of The Rock, known only to the Watchers in the Dark and the Emperor Himself, lies the final and greatest secret of the Dark Angels. Hidden inside a secluded chamber at the heart of the what was once the planet of Caliban, unreachable by all save the cryptic Watchers in the Dark, the mighty Primarch Lion El'Jonson lies slumbering in a coma, his wounds long healed, waiting for the time when he will be needed once again, when the clarion call of battle sounds for the final time, to defend the Imperium of Mankind against its enemies.

"Harnessing the destructive energies of forge worlds within their weaponry, the Vanguard are so soaked in radiation that even to approach them is to confer a death sentence upon yourself. Victory for them is pyrrhic, as this radiation burns through even their heavy armour plate, slowly poisoning them to death even as their carbines bring about the (much quicker) demise of their enemies."

- THE CREATION OF ANGELS -
Since the time of Sanguinius, the Blood Angels have recruited from among the tribes of the Blood on Baal Secundus and Baal Prime (where a colony was established shortly after the time of the Horus Heresy). Youths from the Blood take part in games and tournaments, facing many hazards as they race across the desert, to fight and do battle against one other.
These contests are held once per generation at Angel’s Fall, where a mighty statue of Sanguinius now observes the proceedings. Traditionally, the Time of Challenge is announced by heralds who visit each tribe in flying chariots. Contestants must make their way to Angel’s Fall across the rad-deserts, a process
that weeds out the weakest. The hazards of the desert are many, and it takes a youth of extraordinary skill and courage to even reach the Place of Challenge. Once there they must
vie for the fifty or so places that are available. Those who succeed are taken up in Sky Chariots; those who fail are left behind either to guard the place of testing or to make their
way back to their own tribes.
Those youths accepted as aspirants are taken to the Blood Angels’ fortress monastery on Baal itself. There they see great wonders. They look for the first time on the unmasked faces of
their future brother Marines, and note with some consternation their sharp eye-teeth and sleekly beautiful features. It has to be said that the recruits are far from handsome at this stage. Most aspirants bear marks of their hard lives – it is impossible for an ordinary man to dwell on those barren moons and not feel the terrible kiss of radiation. Many are marked by stigmata, most are short and stunted, their growth stifled by malnutrition. Many more will be marked by lesions and carcinoma.
All the aspirants are left to observe vigil in the great Chapel of the Chapter, before drinking from the Sanguinary Chalice brought to them by the Sanguinary Priests. Slumber soon overtakes them and the aspirants are borne by Servitors to the Apothecarion where the geneseed of Sanguinius is implanted in their recumbent bodies. From the Apothecarion the aspirants are taken to the Hall of Sarcophagi and each is placed within a mighty golden sarcophagus. Life support nodes are attached to them and for the next year they are fed intravenously with a mixture of nutrients and the Blood of Sanguinius while the gene-seed
does its work.
Many of the aspirants die at this stage, their bodies unable to cope with the strain of the changes that now overtake them. Those who live grow swift and true, echoing the rapid
growth of their Primarch. They put on muscle mass and acquire the extra internal organs that mark a true Space Marine. At this time too they have strange dreams, for the gene-seed
carries within it the memories of Sanguinius. Thus does the Primarch’s essence begin to permeate the souls of his warriors. Afterwards, when sleeping, and sometimes when awake,
these dreams return to haunt the Blood Angels.
When the aspirants emerge from their sarcophagi they are forever changed. They are tall, strong and superhumanly powerful. Their restructured bodies and features have taken on a
beauty that echoes that of their angelic forebear. Their senses are keener, their muscles stronger than tempered steel. They are ready to begin their training as Space Marines.
