Caiber:.... honestly this is about as good as it gets. She's the only reason I've let myself keep breathing.

Chard: the archmagos beleived that with his research, he could do something with the pylons to force back the forces of chaos for good. And so, the final battle began, with the surviving imperial forces gathering around the central pylon network, as the black legion descended from all sides, the warmaster at their head.

Charles: not yet... I did a bit of an... assessment. He's been brainwashed, but there's hope. He's locked up, I've talked to him. When we get back, we decide what to do with him. If we've got to kill him, we've got to kill him. But you know me, not a fan of killing if I can help it.

Byrne: *he shrugs a little, and bites gently on the right side of the cigar, pulling the gold plated lighter from the case with a slightly jerky movement, suggesting it is held in place magnetically. He lights the cigar, holding the trembling flame to the end for a few seconds, then replaces the lighter, closes the case and slides it back into his jacket, and takes the cigar in his right hand in one smooth movement. He exhales with a look of mild satisfaction.* "Excellent run these..." *He holds it up towards a glow globe, in between thumb and forefinger for a second or two, before looking back to caiber and lowering the cigar.* "I rather think the girl would prefer you had some higher ambition. Mourning isn't what i would call a good use of time."

Mute: "And that was that."

Hakken: "I'm a fan. 'll do it if you squeamish."

Caiber:... you're probably right. She told me to keep living, to find a reason to keep going. That's the reason I'm still trying.

Chard: well.... get this, cause we've got enough reports that confirm this to beleive it's true. He managed to get the pylons into... overcharge mode almost. Daemons banished back to the warp, psykers lost their abilities, the legion of the damned who were there disappeared, mutant and posessed chaos soldiers had their daemonic parts simply vanish, daemon engines ground lifelessly to a halt, the living saint's power began to wane, and most miraculously, a beam was sent out into the center of the eye of terror... and the eye began to shrink.

Charles: But.... he wasn't lying about one thing. I took a DNA sample... Hera he has both of our genes.

Charles: I'm not sure what he is.

Caiber: Means I can try to undo the wrongs I did.

Chard: yeah... however, the weakening of the living saint caused her to be badly wounded by the warmaster. Castellan Creed personally lead his men forward to aid her, but in doing so he himself was almost killed by the warmaster... until Celestine shoved her sword in abaddon's back, causing him to teleport back to his ship to escape.

Caiber: we didn't have access to it.

Chard: he had his fleet attack the phalanx as a distraction, and managed to launch the largest chunk of the destroyed blackstone fortress into cadia's surface. The impact cracked open the planet's surface, and shattered the pylon network. With the pylons gone, the eye claimed her. That is how cadia fell.

Charles: aye. Where were we?

Chard: aye. Battle wasn't quite over. As daemons and other monsters overran the planet, of course evacuation began. Creed and the 8th refused to leave, deciding to hold the line at the evac site so the others could get out. About three million cadians got out.

Chard: Well, lead the way.

OOC: So in 40k the closest thing to ODSTs are the Harakoni warhawks and that other Drop regiment. They perform what are essentially HALO jumps (High Altitude Low Opening) using their grav chutes.
Since grav chutes work by literally creating a tunnel of decreased gravity for the wearer, couldn't you theoretically strap 4 to a single man drop pod. And then use those with a set of retrothrusters to drop soldiers from orbit.
The pod protects them from re-entry effects and the heat, while the grav chutes kick in later to aid in deceleration. With the retrothrusters kicking in so the occupant doesn't go splat.

PostSubject: Re: A slightly smaller Mess   A slightly smaller Mess - Page 20 I_icon_minitime2017-09-30, 19:56

OOC: The problem is not the height, its the splat at the end. A drop pod works so well because its too fast to get hit by guided AA fire. Course you can just throw shit tons of flack at them and you'll get some but thats besides the point. At the speeds an astartes drop pod goes, the g forces experienced when the retros fire and slow it down are massive. So a human drop pod would have to slow down for a much longer period, making it vulnerable to flack again as it slows down.

Byrne: *Starts walking off down the companionway.* "I'll see what i can teach you."

Mute: "I... see."

Hera: "Now we spread out, find whats going on."

OOC: That is the main issue, but I guess it depends on how it's used. Considering how prominent shield tech is in 40k you could just slap shields everywhere.
Plus it depends on what you make it from, flak works by basically throwing shrapnel at the target.
If the pod is sufficiently armoured you become immune to traditional flak. Missile based defences have to contend with speed and the sheer number of pods being dropped.

The deceleration is where the trouble lies as you said.
Halo uses a drogue chute followed by landing rockets at about 30m.
Also if Halo can do it, why can't 40k :p

PostSubject: Re: A slightly smaller Mess   A slightly smaller Mess - Page 20 I_icon_minitime2017-09-30, 20:16

OOC: Okay so having spent a moment thinking.
During drop pod assaults, imperial forces utilise multiple pods.
Manned pods are the most numerous, these are single occupant vehicles.
Unmanned pods, these are used as chaff and to obliterate anti air emplacements.
Both are dropped together, but the unmanned pods do not decelerate. Instead they are launched towards flak and missile emplacements with the sole goal of obliterating them with the impact and thus reducing the effectiveness of enemy countermeasures.

PostSubject: Re: A slightly smaller Mess   A slightly smaller Mess - Page 20 I_icon_minitime2017-09-30, 20:20

OOC: Because halo has inertial dampeners. 40k doesn't. Shite level maths being, a human's terminal velocity is 122mph, give 0.5 seconds for deceleration, which is an eternity in drop pod time, so this is generous. You're pulling 11 g's, after 9g you fall unconscious or at the least go blind. And thats for a human. Not an aerodynamic pod. Could use it for stealth ops though. And ramming pods into aa emplacements sounds like a very expensive tactic.

Byrne: "How to be some kind of gentleman. Unless you want to follow Mr Laurence's example, and drink paint thinner by the pint?"

Hera: "has he reported back yet?"

OOC: I will shout space magic bullshit until this works!

"Fighter jets can pull up to 9 g vertically, and the more a pilot can take without blacking out, the better their chances in a dogfight. Some pilots wear “g-suits” which help push the blood away from their legs and towards the brain."

If we assume that the soldiers are wearing specialised gear, then we can say that they are able to withstand the G forces. All we'd then have to work out is how they survive to actually land. Given the Imperiums habit of spamming dudes we could say that the pods suffer tremendous casualties when dropping. Or as you said they're used for special operations and thus they're rarely intercepted.

The idea behind the unmanned pod was basically a big angry kinetic rod!

OOC: 9g. 11g. and remember 11g was a very conservative estimate. Cause. Astartes drop pods apparently go 12,000km/h. With the same 0.5 stop speed. that means they hit 680g. SIX HUNDRED AND EIGHTY. Even if you quarter the speed, thats still completely unsurvivable for a human. To put it bluntly, dropping cunts from orbit is impossible without space wizards.

Mute: *Waves it away. and signs* "I don't."

Byrne: "I've got some quarters ten minutes away. Since my personal quarters were behind the bridge, most of my effects survived the battle. Not my shuttle... but i suppose it can be replaced."

Hakken: "If i passed you down in the sump i'd mug ya. Ya scream, shouldn't be this low. I'm an upscum spire twat, please kill me for my boots."

The way initiative works is, the rock will get from the first guy to the last in 6 seconds. meaning the rock has been accelerated to near the speed of sound and will kill anything the line of peasants is pointing at.
