Backstory wise: Max is smart and fairly fit but he's no close quarters fighter

It's not stat based.
You all start out as untrained scrubs.
Your actions, wounds, and veterinary will all contribute to your fighting skill.
But at the moment, you all suck.
So, all this "your useless" is empty threats. He could literally blow you both away if he got lucky and sprayed you both down.
